Louisville Update!

Did you know that our Louisville Trunk Show has been reschedule for October 15? That's just two weeks away!

Come visit Pavo in Louisville at our last trunk show. We will have lots of Pavo goodies (including new samples) to try out and enjoy. It may be our last trunk show, but don’t worry! We will be starting our new Pavo Pop-Ups in the very near near future (I’m looking at you, Hampton Roads).

We have put up another round of General Admission tickets for purchase here, so please join us at the historic Brown Hotel on October 15 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. We are looking forward to seeing everyone!

Four and Twenty Black Birds

Of course we aren't suggesting that our Love Birds be baked into a pie and to be honest, I had planned this blog post to go in a completely different direction, but we all know what happens to best laid plans. Nonetheless, I decided to keep the title because well, I love it, but moving on to Love Birds Noir...

Love Birds Noir is the latest addition to our Aviary collection. It is no secret that I have a deep and abiding fondness for Love Birds. I know that not everyone cares for the birds and that's perfectly fine,  but there's something about them that I adore and Love Birds Noir calls to me. I'm hesitant to assign a time period to wrap. It's silly and doesn't serve any real purpose, but LB Noir, at least for me, encompasses all the good (and horrible!) images we associate with the late 70s and early 80s. This is most likely because my sister and I had been texting photos taken of our Dad in the late 70s and early 80s to each other at around the same time Love BIrds  Noir was moving through the queue. So when I see LB Noir, I see the twirly disco dresses both my mom and stepmom used to wear and that I loved as a child because I realized I wouldn't have to give up twirly dresses when I grew up; it reminds me of the smoky topaz necklace my mom wore and that I liked to play with as I sat on her lap; it reminds me of the super short shorts and calf-length socks my Dad, and most Dads at the time, seemed to wear for their weekend uniform. Perhaps it is that LB Noir reminds me more of my family at a set moment in time more than anything and yes, it's just a wrap, but I enjoy finding those memories in my wraps.

Woven with an extra long staple Egyptian cotton warp and our noir cotton fill, Love Birds is a thick, smooshy, and squishy wrap. The woven contour binding in the wrap provides texture and grip while the negative space of the birds counters that texture with soapiness and glide. It's really quite a delightful combination.  Love Birds Noir offers wonderful stretch without any sagginess. They offer cush, support and they pleat practically of their own accord. Sure, it's a thicker wrap, but don't let that deter you from a truly delightful wrap experience.

Love Birds Noir is now available online!

Hot Browns and Brunch

Is it strange that I am weirdly excited to go to Louisville for our next trunk show so I can stuff my face with a Hot Brown? It's not exactly what I like in food or maybe it is and I just don't want to admit it, but it has been four years since my last Hot Brown and I think it's fair to say that it's time to indulge.

But even better is the reason to be in Louisville: to see our amazing Pavotees. Please join us for our Louisville Trunk Show on June 25th from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm on Sunday, June 25th at The Brown Hotel

VIP and General Admission tickets will be available on our website on April 27 at noon EDT. The VIP ticket wrap for Louisville will be Quark Periwinkle. Head on over to our IG for a sneak peak!  We will be continuing to offer Pavotees the opportunity to build their own swag bag; both VIP and General Admission guests are welcome to add a hoodie, t-shirt, additional Quark Periwinkle or water bottle to their swag bag.

There will be the usual hors d’oeuvres, mingling and catching up, not to mention a carefully curated collection of wraps for the show. A little birdie told me to expect linen in Louisville ;) We will do our best to accommodate everyone’s needs, but please send us an email at contact@pavotextiles.com if you have a specific request or question with which we can help you.

Remember—if you are buying a VIP or General Admission ticket for a friend, please put your friend’s name down as the attendee. Tickets are not transferable. If you need to cancel your order, just let us know by May 20th to avoid a 10% cancelation fee.

If you have any questions at all, just let us know. We would be happy to help in any way we can. Looking forward to seeing everyone in Louisville <3

Celebration: Etini Amethyst

Etini is Pavo. Pavo is Etini. They're like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. They just go together and they go together so well. I can write quite a bit about Etini (I'm looking at you Etini Acanthus). I really do think it is my favorite Guild or at least Etini is the one Guild that still has a permanent home in my personal collection.

For the the past couple years, perhaps even a bit longer, we've had heard requests for a rich, deep purple Etini. Something lovely to pair with Etini Cobalt, or Etini Poinsettia, or Etini Coal. Those who love their Etinis told us they really, really, really wanted a true purple Etini. Something that would remind you of both the first purple crocuses that signal the arrival of Spring and the vibrant gloamings that come with the arrival of Autumn. There was Etini Heather and  it was lovely, for sure, but something amethyst would surely round out the Etini rainbow. There was a Farrand Amethyst, so why not an Etini Amethyst?  Honestly, I don't have an adequate answer to that question. As I often like to joke,  I just started working here yesterday.

But, you know, Erin has this way of working her magic and really, I can mention something in passing and then like 14 months later, there's a sample waiting on my doorstep and I'm like, wait a minute. What the heck just happened? (still waiting on my maggot wrap though) A better example of this would be this past summer. Chemotherapy does really weird things to your taste buds and salivary glands. Sometimes food loses all flavor, or you can only taste salty things or taste things that are tangy or sour. I had little appetite this past summer, but let me tell you, I found some old school Now & Laters at the Richdale (the lovely gas station a short walk away from the store) and they were like manna sent from heaven. They were tangy, a bit sour and I could taste them. But I felt a bit silly, because you when become an adult, you're not supposed to be wolfing down children's candy at such an alarming rate. So I kept my obsession to myself, or so I thought until one day I went to the Richdale and my Now & Laters were gone. Just gone. No box. Nothing. I was devastated. I headed into work. Shuffled over to my desk and sat down. Erin looked at me cooly and asked what was wrong. I told her nothing and went about my work, but when I went to open my desk drawer for a pen, I was surprised to find my entire desk drawer filled with Now & Laters <3

Digressions aside, imagine my surprise when a saw a JPG file sync to our shared Pavo folder called " Etini Amethyst," and so I texted Erin asking her what was up with the Etini Amethyst. She responded that it was a just a small pet project on which she had been casually working. Nothing important. Just a little side job. Something fun with which to celebrate our anniversary.

Our anniversary exclusive, Etini Amethyst, will be available on our website until 8:00 am on April 14th, 2017. Please allow six to eight  weeks lead time from when the exclusive closes until shipment.

Happy Anniversary, Pavotees!

Canoodling with the California Collection: Acanthus Veronica

I find myself missing the days of receiving a new wrap and going through the ritual of taking it out of its packaging, noting the feel in hand, doing a quick wrap job (the horror!) and then tossing it in the washing machine, ironing it just so (yes—I love ironing) and then putting it through its paces.

But as I sit here with the samples from our California collection, I feel the old pull of my routine calling to me. So here we go: Notes from an Aged Wrapper.

Design Name: Acanthus

Colorway: Veronica

Fiber: 100% Extra Long Staple Egyptian cotton

Weight: 320 G/M^2. This wrap is densely woven and thick with Bethanne Knudson's (of the Oriole Mill) unique contour binding. There is a cushiness on the shoulders that feels quite lovely; wrapping my five year old and carrying him for any length of time is a workout, but Acanthus Veronica made my shoulders and lower back incredibly happy!

Similar hand feel brand new: Sparkleberry, Trillium, Parterre.

Similar hand feel after wash: Mostly Sparkleberry to me.

Fiber Memory: Excellent stretch along the bias, lending to a definite feel of modabililty when pulling a chest pass tight.

Drape: Medium. This is a thicker wrap. I suspect the more it breaks in, the softer it will become. Acanthus Veronica is not a hard wrap to break in, but it requires a bit of patience.

Touch: Acanthus Veronica is smooth on the warp dominant side and is more textured on the fill side, offering different wrapping experiences.

Now to try and convince my five year old to go up again!

Looking forward to seeing everyone in Berkeley this weekend :)

Black History Month: A Reflection

By Natasha King

I have been working on this blog post for most of the month of February. I want to be really honest in saying that I have I love/hate relationship with Black History Month. I fully recognize the importance of it, but I guess what I disagree with is the execution.

As a kid I knew that come February I would see an avalanche of “facts” about the black contribution to US history. We were bombarded with meager amounts of information, mostly male dominant facts; the presentation of which, seemed unappealing and uninspiring. Those small snippets of information came condensed and hurried and were gone just as quickly once the month ended. Hearing those facts felt like checking a box just to say that you did something.

Now stick with me because this does tie into the babywearing community at large.

As a black person living in America I mourned all the things that had been passed down from generation to generation that were stolen from me. I felt disconnected from the traditions of my ancestors and the essence of who I was at my core. That all changed the day I touched a woven wrap. I felt an instant connection. For me, the simple act of holding my son close in a piece of fabric bridged the gap between myself and my ancestors. It has been an intense love affair that continues even as Jaxon is becoming longer and heavier. But as long as he wants to go up, I will continue to oblige.

However, with that as the backdrop please understand that I am writing this piece because the babywearing world has not been all sunshine and roses for people of color. There is much work that can be done. At times this work feels uncomfortable and I invite you to embrace the discomfort and use it to grow. We are carrying the future. Our actions will shape how they interact with people who may be different from them.

So this year as February comes to a close, I challenge you to do your own research about how black history is really intertwined with the history of America. How the history of black people in America shapes what America is today and how that experience still impacts our lives.

And if I may leave you with a few suggestions they would be:

Learn how history became this story.

Realize that some things have not just languished in the past.

Be mindful of the person as a whole.

Teach your children to celebrate color, not erase.

Amplify the voices of the oppressed.

Don’t limit your quest for knowledge to a calendar month.

Will there be an after party/evening of celebration?

If Pavotees would like to have an after party / evening of celebration, they are welcome to do so! Unfortunately, we are typically unable to attend as we are obligated to close out the event, take care of inventory, accounting and other routine chores, but we will do our absolute best to make time for our Pavotees after the event. Please don’t think we are ignoring your or don’t want to spend time with you; we’re just trying to close out the show and vacate the venue. Sometimes we have a very limited amount of time to do this.

Will tickets sell out?

Unfortunately, we do not know the answer to this question. Our tickets for Pavo Presents Florida did not sell out, but our tickets for Pavo Presents Asheville sold out right away!

What will be the exclusive VIP wrap for the Pavo Presents California?

The VIPavotee wrap for both Northern California and Southern California will be Middle Chair Moraine.

What other wraps will be available?

We are currently working on our limited California Collection and will provide more information closer to the trunk shows.

Are the spaces baby proofed and mobile baby safe?

No. We do our best to make sure that obvious dangers are removed, but much of the time we are not allowed to alter the venue space. Please be aware of your children and keep a close eye on them at all times as you would do in any public space.

Should we bring snacks?

Both events will be catered. You are welcome to bring snacks if you like, but there will be food and drink will be available.

Please be aware that neither the food nor the space are allergen-free. We do our very best to accommodate a wide variety of food preferences, but we might not be able to make changes based on your food requirements. If you have a specific request, please email us no later than February 13 so that we may try to accommodate your request. Please note that we will be do our absolute best to accommodate requests, but that we cannot guarantee that we will be able to do so.

Does your wrappee have to be worn or may s/he come on the loose?

The ticket price allows entry for the attendee and one wrappee, three years old and younger. You may either wear your wrappee or your child may be mobile. Please be aware of your child's location at all times. The venue at The Mission Inn and the Berkeley City Club is not child proofed and will not be fully childproofed in any reasonable manner.

Any child over three years of age will need a general admissions ticket for the trunk show.

Will I have to pay sales tax?

Yes. We are required to charge sales tax on all purchases made at the Pavo Presents California trunk show. Riverside sales tax is 8% and Berkeley sales tax is 9.5%.

May I purchase more than one VIP ticket if I am buying a ticket for myself and a friend?

If you are buying a ticket for a friend, you should put your friend's name on the ticket during checkout.

I am flying from out of state to attend the trunk show. I’m worried that tickets will sell out. What do I do?

If you are flying in from out of state and all tickets are sold out (all tiers), please contact us at contact@pavotextiles.com so that we may help you out.

I want to come to the trunk show, but all the tickets are sold out. What do I do?

Please email us at contact@pavotextiles.com so that we may help you.

I need to cancel my ticket. What should I do?

Please email us at contact@pavotextiles.com so that we may cancel your ticket. All tickets canceled prior to March 1 will be refunded in full. Tickets canceled after March 1st will be refunded and may be subject to a 10% cancellation fee. Please allow 7-10 business days to process your refund.

Why are there no more VIP tickets available? Why are there no more General Admission tickets available?

We work very hard to ensure that there is a careful balance between VIP and General Admission tickets available. Our capacity is limited by our venue space and that space is limited by availability. If you missed out on buying trunk show tickets, please email us at contact@pavotextiles.com to check for availability. If there are no tickets available, we can place you on the waiting list and notify you when space becomes available.

I see that there are people from out of state attending the trunk show in my state. Do you allow that?

Our trunk shows are open to anyone who is able to attend.

I’m nervous about attending the trunk show. What can I expect?

Historically, trunk shows have been small intimate events that allow a designer to meet and talk with their customers. Our trunk shows have proven to be a bit larger, but Erin and I work very hard to make sure that they still retain an intimate feel. There will be food and drink, mingling, and many fellow Pavotees who can geek out with you about your Pavos. We look forward to meeting everyone! If you are worried about the trunk show experience, join us in Pavo Customer Appreciation, where we and past trunk show attendees can personally answer your questions or feel free to email us if you have any questions.

Love Birds Lavender

There are birds which migrate and then, there are birds which do not migrate. Of course, this makes perfect sense, but in the world that I had created in my mind, and which is quite often wrong, all birds migrate. This just seems how Nature should work.

You can imagine my surprise last winter, as I jogged along the causeway in Essex, to spy a flock of random geese foraging in the long dead and brittle grasses of the salt marsh. That winter had been unusually warm, so I suppose the geese had yet to feel any compulsion to leave, but it struck me as peculiar. Everything else in the marsh had prepared for winter: the grasses had died, the mosquitos and green heads had long since vanished, the fragrant sea roses of the summer had pulled down into the ground preparing for the winter cold and yet, there were these geese murmuring softly through the waters, completely oblivious to the fact that it was winter. I had one of those rare moments of quiet. No children knocking on the bathroom door, no little voices asking why I was taking so long, nobody declaring they hated the dinner I had made and could they have yogurt instead, not that I have anything against yogurt, but I am baffled as to how a 5 year old manages to thrive on yogurt, toast and oatmeal.  Nobody tugging at the sleeve of my shirt. No spilled milk to mop up. Just perfect stillness.

I later asked Erin about the geese and she casually mentioned that they were Canada geese and that they had migrated to the marsh at some point and well, just decided to make their home there. I asked if they ever migrated and she thought about it for a bit and then told me that they had just appeared one day and then never left.

I realize that Canada Geese are typically considered a pest; they can be loud, aggressive and territorial. The Canada Geese near my home in California will attack you if they smell even the slightest hint of food on you, but I have a soft spot in my heart for birds, particularly those birds who are considered lowly and mundane (I’m looking at you, pigeons. Seriously. Pigeons: The Fascinating Saga of the World’s Most Revered and Reviled Bird is a must read). To be fair, the geese don’t pose as much as a problem in Essex. They stick to the marsh and leave the humans alone and the humans leave them to their own devices. I know that not everyone cares for Canada Geese and rightly so, but I admired their quiet determination in the salt marsh.

It was that very winter that Erin and I decided to re-imagine our Love Birds in a warm, cuddly alpaca. I would like to say that the idea was entirely our own, but we really must give some credit to those geese. Not everyone loves Love Birds, but they are special to us and in many ways are our namesake wrap. It is the one wrap that truly combines the best of Oriole and Pavo and because of that, Love Birds is dear to us. Love Birds Lavender is woven with our signature ivory, extra long staple Egyptian cotton warp with a rich, lavender alpaca fill. The lavender isn't just any old, boring lavender: it's a beautiful blending of magenta, sky blue and warm lavender alpaca threads. It gives our Love Birds Lavender a unique richness and luster  Our alpaca is exceptionally fine, soft, cuddly, and has a natural sheen to it. It is quite warm, yet lightweight and its hypoallergenic properties make it a good choice for those who have wool allergies.

Care:

Alpaca has a reputation as being a more time intensive fiber in regards to care. I suppose that’s true to a certain extent and care can look daunting at first, but all our alpaca needs is a a gentle swish in the bathtub or sink with a bit of your favorite woolie wash. Rinse until there are no more bubbles and gently roll up your alpaca to remove excess water. After doing this, I prefer to lay out a large beach towel and lay my wet wrap on that and roll up the towel with the wrap inside to soak up as much water as possible. I then hang to air dry, making sure the wrap is supported throughout its length. You will find that after a bath, our alpaca fluffs up and becomes quite soft.

Fiber

66% Egyptian Cotton

34% Fine Alpaca

Wrapping Qualities

Love Birds Lavender has a gorgeous, thick fluid drape in hand. It provides a soft cushiness on the shoulders while providing solid support for those wrapping toddlers. Although Love Birds Lavender is an alpaca blend, it still provides good stretch and rebound, much like our cotton Love Birds. It will most certainly keep you and your little one warm while trekking out on snow days or in gloomy winter weather.

My thanks to Tracy and Brianna who offered us their insight into Love Birds Lavender and to Dana and Natasha who offered editorial input. You ladies are the best!

I know a lot of people don't care for the birds. We've been told their eyes are creepy. Their feet too sharp. Their beaks poised to bite someone's finger off. I still love them. Lets be real. Birds can be assholes sometimes. Ever tried eating food at the beach? I rest my case. But a considerable amount of time was spent reconfiguring the eye, the beak and the feet. I feel we have a softer, more contemplative Love Bird, which seems fitting for this time of year.  I know we might not always acknowledge it when you make suggestions, but we really do listen to you!

Lucinda Pumpkin Spice

It is with the utmost irony and delight we offer Lucinda Pumpkin Spice our Pavotees. Those who are interested in purchasing can email us at contact@pavotextiles.com. Please state your first two choices in size, your mailing address and your Paypal address for invoicing. Quantities and sizes are limited.

While we adore summer and we will very much miss the long days and warm evenings, there are many things we love about Autumn: the turn of color on the leaves, the crisp mornings and cool nights, rich red apples ready for the picking, sunflowers blazing in bloom to catch the rays of the sunlight that disappears earlier and earlier every day. And of course, everything pumpkin (and hubbard squash because I love hubbard squash, but hubbard squash latte doesn't have quite the same ring to it).

Pumpkin Spice was born out of the creative musings on the seasonal mystique and basic public obsession with the Pumpkin Spice Latte. A beautiful autumn color palette of reds, yellows and rich earth browns, Lucinda Pumpkin Spice is a glorious fallen leaf orange dobby; it is the perfect complement to the latte you hate to love so much.

Pavo Presents Arizona

Arizona holds a special place in our hearts. I remember renting our huge white van to haul all of our gear to IBC. Waking up while it was still dark to start our drive across the desert, being pulled over by the fuzz for speeding across said desert and then IBC (I think there is an IG post out there somewhere documenting this moment). Where do I even begin? Needless to say, Arizona is indeed a remarkable place and we are so excited to be returning. I still don't know what a sundevil is.

No. Please email us to cancel your ticket if you are unable to attend the event.

Will names be printed on the tickets and cross checked with identification for entry?

Everyone is checked against our master list at the entrance to the venue. Those not on the list will not be admitted. There is the possibility that we might have tickets available for purchase at the door, but they are not guaranteed.

What time will the event start?

For those with VIP tickets, the event will open at 12:00.

For those with General Admission tickets, the event will open at 1:00.

Will there be an after party/evening of celebration?

If Pavotees would like to have an after party / evening of celebration, they are welcome to do so! Unfortunately, we are typically unable to attend as we are obligated to close out the event, take care of inventory, accounting and other routine chores, but we will do our best to make time for our Pavotees after the event.

Will I need to stalk for tickets? Will they sell out?

Unfortunately, we do not know the answer to this question. Our tickets for Pavo Presents Florida did not sell out, but our tickets for Pavo Presents Asheville sold out right away!

The VIPavotee wrap for Arizona will be Aerie Ink, an brilliant new addition to our much anticipated quilt series.

What other wraps will be available?

We will also have Tippi Spearmint, Ombré Gotham Pluot, Swallowtail Zaffre and an exciting new Hearts! Arizona will have a fantastic mix of Pavo classics and new designs.

Is the space baby proofed and mobile baby safe?

No. Please be aware of your children and keep a close eye on them at all times as you would do in any public space.

Should we bring snacks?

The event will be catered by the lovely staff at Biltmore Phoenix. Please note that neither the food nor the space are not allergen-free. We do our very best to accommodate a wide variety of food preferences, but please be aware that we might not be able to make changes based on your food requirements.

Does your wrappee have to be worn or may s/he come on the loose?

The ticket price allows entry for the attendee and one wrappee, three years old and younger. You may either wear your wrappee or your child may be mobile. Please be aware of your child's location at all times. The venue at Biltmore Phoenix is not child proofed and will not be fully childproofed in any reasonable manner.

Any child over three years of age will need a general admissions ticket for the trunk show.

Will I have to pay sales tax?

Yes. We are required to charge sales tax on all purchases made at the Pavo Presents Arizona. Phoenix sales tax is 8.6%.

May I purchase more than one VIP ticket if stalking for myself and a friend?

If you are stalking for a friend, you should put your friend's name on the ticket during checkout.

I am flying from out of state to attend the trunk show. I’m worried that tickets will sell out. What do I do?

If you are flying in from out of state and all tickets are sold out (VIPavotee and GA), please contact us at contact@pavotextiles.com so that we may help you out.

There will be food and drink, mingling, most likely waiting in line to purchase wraps (we implemented a new system at the holiday party such that people would not have to wait in line, but would still have the opportunity to buy the wraps they wanted, but found people still wanted to wait in line), the historic setting at the Biltmore and many fellow Pavotees who can geek out with you about your Pavos. We look forward to meeting everyone! If you are worried about the trunk show experience, join us in Pavo Customer Appreciation, where we and past trunk show attendees can personally answer your questions.

Pavo Presents North Carolina

The Asheville trunk show is almost upon us. North Carolina is starting to feel like a second home to us and we are excited to be holding the trunk show at the Inn on Biltmore Estate. Yes—that Biltmore! And while the trunk show will be wonderful, we really do encourage people to wander the grounds and explore the gardens and the estate. A new exhibition just opened at the Biltmore, showcasing historic wedding gowns in film. If any one if interested in historic textiles, the display looks fascinating.

When and where will the North Carolina trunk show be held?

13 March 2016

12:00 to 4:00

VIP entry will be at 12:00

General Admission will be at 1:00
